Digital Camera Usb Cord

How come the computer won't let me unplug the USB cord from my digital camera?

Okay I upload pictures on my computer with a USB cord that is plugged in my camera and into the hardrive. IT WORKS. but then when I click on the little thingy on the taskbar to unplug and eject the device it won't let me this happened to me several times all it says is cannot be unplugged not try it later I wait 20 minutes try to unplug it IT STILL WON'T WORK so I just unplug it without safety. Help Please?

p.s: I even went to start. settings then control panel and click remove/add hardware did the same thing won't work.

I sometimes experience the simular problem with external hard drives. Usually it seems it's because I still have a window with the drive contents open. This might be like shutting down your hard drive with opened files on it. It can corrupt the files (at least that's what could happen back in the days of 8088, 286, and 386 processors.)

Ever notice when you had to shut down your system when it froze up on you, Windows would restart with a message that it had to check the system for potential errors because of a non-orderly shut-down? It's probably open files it's searching for and trying to fix. I guess you could think of it as leaving a filing cabinet open in a hurricane. Maybe something got in there or maybe something got out.

This might be why the system doesn't want you to disconnect yet. Someone thinks it's important to avoid data corruption. Maybe a lot of modern devices are immune and the system hasn't been "tweaked" to understand it's dealing with an immune device and not a hard drive.

So, I would shut down any windows and then see if the system says it's okay to remove the device. Then I might go to Task Manager and start looking for processes that might be running which utilize your device.
