Chapters: Panoramic Painting, Panorama, White Mountain Art, Romantic Era Panoramas, List of Hudson River School Artists, Diorama, Little Switzerland, Hudson River School, Shan Shui, Aerial Landscape Art, Inscape, Cyclorama, Macchiaioli, Skyline, Cloudscape, Motif Number 1, Veduta, Panorama of London, Seascape, Brown County Art Colony, Panorama Mesdag, Richmond Group, Hoosier Group. Excerpt: Landscape art is a term that covers the depiction of natural scenery such as mountains, valleys, trees, rivers, and forests, and especially art where the main subject is a wide view, with its elements arranged into a coherent composition. In other works landscape backgrounds for figures can still form an important part of the work. Sky is almost always included in the view, and weather is often an element of the composition. Detailed landscapes as a distinct subject are not found in all artistic traditions, and develop when there is already a sophisticated tradition of representing other subjects. The two main traditions spring from Western painting and Chinese art, going back well over a thousand years in both cases. Landscape photography has been very important since the 19th century, and is covered by its own article. The word landscape is from the Dutch, landschap originally meaning a patch of cultivated ground, and then an image. The word entered the English language at the start of the 17th century, purely as a term for works of art; it was not used to describe real vistas before 1725. Landscape with scene from the Odyssey, Rome, c. 60-40 BCE. Zhan Ziqian, Strolling About in Spring, a very early Chinese landscape, c. 600 Shen Zhou, Poet on a Mountain c. 1500. Painting and poem by Shen Zhou:"White clouds encircle the mountain waist like a sash,/Stone steps mount high into the void |

Painting People: State of the Art $230.84 After a century in which the lexicon of artists' materials expanded from the classic oil, canvas, stone and plaster to include photography, film, performance, found objects and concepts, the spotlight has finally swung back. A new generation of artists--as well as some who never abandoned figurative painting in the first place--is relishing the solitary, slow, subtle set of processes involved in not just painting, but painting people. They are choosing paint's unique ability to distill a lifetime of events rather than photography's glimpse of a frozen moment. Painting People, edited by the prominent London art historian and critic Charlotte Mullins, unites and contrasts the work of a key group of artists from around the world, and investigates their richly varied accomplishments in lucid text with detailed commentaries, accompanied by more than 150 reproductions. The list of contributing artists is stellar, ranging from photo-based painters like Luc Tuymans, Peter Doig and Marlene Dumas to Pop artists like Sigmar Polke and Alex Katz, photorealists like Chuck Close and Gerhard Richter, Neoexpressionists like Cecily Brown, and comics-inspired painters like Yoshitomo Nara, Inka Essenhigh and Takashi Murakami. There are erotic grotesques from John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage, meditations on the muse by Elizabeth Peyton and Lucian Freud, Repro-realistic work from Neo Rauch and of course self-portraits by Philip Akkerman and Marcel Dzama, among others. |

The Photographs of Frederick H. Evans $50 This richly illustrated book focuses on the life and work of British photographer Frederick H. Evans (1853-1943). Initially a bookseller in London, Evans began pursuing photography in the 1880s. His platinum prints of medieval cathedrals in England and France are among the most renowned architectural images in photographic history. He explored these stone monuments with a particular interest in spirituality and symbolism. Evans was a member of the Linked Ring, an association of photographers formed in England in 1892 to promote photography as a fine art. Despite Evans''s important contribution to the field of photography, this is the first significant publication of his work since 1992. An exhibition of his prints will be on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 2 through June 6, 2010. |

Two Million Miles $85 In an increasingly mobile society, it's common to cross the globe many times in a single month. Journeys that might once have taken weeks, now take hours. All of this travel is a suitable metaphor for Andrew Macpherson's rise to the pinnacle of celebrity photography. He has literally traveled the world to profile the best-known people of our age; Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, and George Clooney to name a few. As he's done so, he's also embarked on an artistic journey to bring something fresh and inviting to each of his images. In this quest, he employs a multitude of varied techniques, playing with form, context and color. A note of poignancy overshadows this work. Many of the original negatives were lost in a warehouse fire. It is a testament to the strength of Macpherson's work that even scanned from magazine pages—as some of these images are—the results still radiate vitality and power. Originally from London, Andrew Macpherson is now based in Los Angeles. His body of work includes covers for Rolling Stone and Vogue. He has photographed personalities as varied as Bono, Muhammed Ali, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone and John Malkovich..• Profits from this remarkable collection will be donated to the Entertainment Industry Foundation's Women's Cancer Initiatives• An exuberant celebration of the photographer's artistry and of the many fascinating celebrities captured by his lens |
