photography of the 20th century
Looking for a lo-fi camera?

I want to buy an old vintage camera that takes 'lo-fi, aesthetic looking' photography. As of late I've been admiring photo's taken from the 20th century and have had a desire to capture similar photo's. There's a certain aesthetic feel to those photographs that are often not captured any more due to digital camera's.

So any recommendations? I wouldn't mind seeing the photo's taken from the camera you recommend either since I probably won't be unless I can see what it takes.

- If you need to know anymore details about what exactly I'm looking for then please ask and I will edit this post. Thanks.

Cameras don't do that, it's the film and that film went away a long time ago.

If you're talking about the kinds of shots taken in the 1800's it's still in the film. They didn't use film then it was a plate system with emulsion on the plate. It was exposed to light through their crude lenses and processed - don't ask how I don't know.

Now, with digital, you can get virtually the same effect with software.
With film it's in the processing - that takes special knowledge and probably will cost big $$.

If this is truly an interest I'd consider using a digital camera and buying some appropriate software. Then you can print if you wish to achieve the "old time" effect.

20th Century Photography

Images of the century (TASCHEN's 25th anniversary special edition) The history of photography began some 150 years ago, but only relatively recently has it been fully recognised as a medium in its own right. Cologne's Museum Ludwig was the first museum of contemporary art to devote a substantial section to international photography. The L. Fritz Gruber collection, from which this book is drawn, is one of the most important in Germany and one of the most representative anywhere in the world, constituting the core of the museum's holdings. This book provides a fascinating insight into the collection's rich diversity; from conceptual art to abstraction to reportage, all of the major movements and genres are represented via a vast selection of the century's most remarkable photographs. From Ansel Adams to Piet Zwart, over 850 works are presented in alphabetical order by photographer, with descriptive texts and photographers' biographical details.

Chapters: Ansel Adams, Diane Arbus, Linda Mccartney, Lee Miller, Francesca Woodman, Margaret Bourke-White, Robert Mapplethorpe, Walker Evans, W. Eugene Smith, David Lachapelle, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, Garry Winogrand, Philippe Halsman, Lisette Model, Clarence John Laughlin, Peter Hujar. Excerpt: Ansel Easton Adams Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 April 22, 1984) was an American photographer and environmentalist , best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West , especially in Yosemite National Park . One of his most famous photographs was Moon and Half Dome, Yosemite National Park, California. With Fred Archer, Adams developed the Zone System as a way to determine proper exposure and adjust the contrast of the final print. The resulting clarity and depth characterized his photographs and the work of those he taught the system. Adams primarily used large-format cameras, despite their size, weight, setup time, and film cost, because their high resolution helped ensure sharpness in his images. Adams founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham , which in turn created the Museum of Modern Art 's department of photography. Adams's timeless and visually stunning photographs are reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books, making his photographs widely recognizable. Life Childhood Adams was born in the Western Addition of San Francisco, California , to distinctly upper-class parents Charles Hitchcock Adams and Olive Bray Adams. He was an only child and was named after his uncle Ansel Easton. The Adams family came from New England, having migrated from the north of Ireland in the early 1700s. His grandfather founded and built a prosperous lumber business, which his father later ran, though his father s natural talents

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Robert Capa (October 22, 1913 May 25, 1954), born Endre Ern Friedmann, was a Hungarian combat photographer and photojournalist who covered five different wars: the Spanish Civil War, the Second Sino-Japanese War, World War II across Europe, the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, and the First Indochina War. He documented the course of World War II in London, North Africa, Italy, the Battle of Normandy on Omaha Beach and the liberation of Paris. His action photographs, such as those taken during the 1944 Normandy invasion, portray the violence of war with unique impact. In 1947, Capa co-founded Magnum Photos with, among others, the French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. The organization was the first cooperative agency for worldwide freelance photographers. Born Endre Friedmann to Dezs and Júlia Friedmann on October 22, 1913 in Budapest, Hungary. Deciding that there was little future under the regime in Hungary, he left home at 18. Capa originally wanted to be a writer; however, he found work in photography in Berlin and grew to love the art. In 1933, he moved from Germany to France because of the rise of Nazism, but found it difficult to find work there as a freelance journalist. He adopted the name "Robert Capa" around this time because he felt that it would be recognizable and American-sounding since it was similar to that of film director Frank Capra. (In fact, "cápa" is a Hungarian word meaning 'shark'.) Loyalist Militiaman at the Moment of Death, Cerro Muriano, September 5, 1936From 1936 to 1939, he was in Spain, photographing the horrors of the Spanish Civil War, along with Gerda Taro, his companion and professional photography partner, and David Seymour. A Much Recorded War: The Russo-Japanese War in History and Imagery

A Much Recorded War: The Russo-Japanese War in History and Imagery

$40

At the dawn of the 20th century, the Russo-Japanese War (1904-05) became a worldwide political focal point. The war, marked the rise of Japan as a world power, paved the way for the Russian Revolution, and made Theodore Roosevelt the first American ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. It engaged the fervent attention of Asia, Europe, and the United States--so much so that the Milton Bradley Co. created a popular board game based on the war. But more than this, the Russo-Japanese conflict was the first war to be fully recorded by the international media. Journalists, photographers, and filmmakers poured into the areas, capturing the battles in words and visuals, and creating in the process a flood of images remarkable for their vibrancy and power.A Much Recorded War examines the Russo-Japanese conflict from the viewpoint of its artistic legacy, exploring the ways in which it was represented, promoted, and mythologized. Featuring more than 80 objects--from woodblock prints, lithographs, watercolors, and photographs to film, postcards, and even garments--the book discusses the origins and history of the war, the development of its imagery in Japanese art, and the groundbreaking role of photography and film. Published to mark the 100th anniversary of the Portsmouth Treaty, which ended the war, this is both a remarkable work of historical scholarship and a brilliant compendium of period graphic art.

 Acts of Light

Acts of Light

$39.95

The breathtaking images in Acts of Light are the result of John Deane's unprecedented access as a promotional photographer for the Martha Graham Dance Company. The first book to comprehensively survey Graham's dances in full color digital photography, it also features personal interviews with this new generation of Graham interpreters, who reflect on their own lives, the meaning each dance has for them personally, and the Graham technique in frank and touching style. Dancers reveal how they approach now-classic works and personalize their interpretations, coming to them with a new sensibility and unique life experiences. The 18 featured works range from the Greek cycle and biblically inspired ballets through abstract studies of tragedy and hope, considerations of loss incurred in wartime, and literary speculations like Deaths and Entrances, a recently revived work on the Bronte sisters. Deane and Cano give special consideration to the beloved American masterwork Graham created in collaboration with composer Aaron Copland--Appalachian Spring. Drawing on essays, poetry, and excerpts from Graham's own notebook, Acts of Light considers the narrative, dramatic, and philosophical base for each dance, and offers reflections on its contemporary relevance for today's audience. Appealing to dance historians, professional dancers, students of dance, and those with interests in the performing arts, this book provides an insightful appreciation of the living influence of Graham as a 20th-century icon.

An Anthology of African Art: The Twentieth Century

An Anthology of African Art: The Twentieth Century

$126.47

The term Modern African Art is not an abuse of language. The 20th century has seen, but not properly documented, the birth, development, and maturation of contemporary art in sub-Saharan Africa, an art which was not simply imported in the 1950s but which finds its sources both in colonial realities and in local cultures and civilizations. An Anthology African Art: The Twentieth Century does not propose to document any one African art, but rather to open up this vast but underexplored field to include a diverse theoretical, historical, geographical, and critical map of this dense and ancient region. Contributions by more than 30 international authors recount the birth of art schools in the 1930s, the development of urban design and public art, and the importance of socially-concerned art during the Independence movements. From Ethiopia, Nigeria, and the Belgian Congo to Ghana, Senegal, and Angola, through the works of hundreds of artists working in every conceivable medium and context, this anthology manages the continental and unique feat of providing a thorough, expansive, diversified, and fully illustrated history of African art in the 20th century.Since 1991, Paris-based Editions Revue Noire has dedicated itself to the multidisciplinary artistic production of the African continent and the African diaspora. Publishers of the critically acclaimed Anthology of African Photography, a comprehensive chronicle of African photography from the mid-1800s to the present, Revue Noire also produces a self-titled magazine devoted to contemporary African art and culture.

 Anselm Keifer

Anselm Keifer

$147.9

German artist Anselm Kiefer (b. 1945) is one of the most important and controversial artists of the 20th century. From the time of his appearance at the 1980 Venice Biennale, through such diverse mediums as painting, photography, artist's books, installations, and sculpture, he has interpreted the great political and cultural issues at the heart of the modern European sensibility: the connections among memory, history, and mythology; war; the Holocaust; and ethnic and national identity. His lyrical explorations of Germanness have prompted heated debate. In this extensively illustrated volume -- the first complete survey of his work -- Daniel Arasse analyzes Kiefer's education, influences, philosophy, and art. Organized both chronologically and according to the artist's recurrent motifs, the book's approximately 250 full-color images trace Kiefer's creative evolution, and present his great themes in their full scope and power.

 Barcelona And Modernity

Barcelona And Modernity

$65

During the years after the September Revolution of 1868, Barcelona experienced tremendous industrial growth and emerged as the most politically and culturally progressive city in Spain. Barcelona and Modernity examines this remarkable seventy-one-year period, when Barcelona also reigned as one of the most dynamic centers of modernist art and architecture in Europe. Focusing on the Catalan Renaixenca, Modernisme, Noucentisme, avant-garde movements of the early 20th century, and artistic reactions to the Spanish Civil War, essays by an extraordinary international team of scholars offer new insights into the work of such Catalan artists as Antoni Gaudi, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, and Salvador Dali, among others, by setting them in context with the art of their teachers, colleagues, and rivals. With approximately 350 works in a variety of media--painting, sculpture, photography, furniture, decorative arts, and architectural design--this intriguing book also explores how Catalan artists derived inspiration from local traditions while contributing their own innovations to international modernism. Broader in scope than any previous treatment of the subject, this book is sure to alter popular perceptions of Catalonia and become a fundamental text for years to come.

 Berenice Abbott, Photographer

Berenice Abbott, Photographer

$20

One theme repeatedly crops up in the life and career of Berenice Abbott: her refusal to be defined by other people's expectations. Spurning traditional roles for women of her era, she lived a bohemian life among other artists in New York's Greenwich Village and Paris, and embarked upon a career in what was then a male-dominated field. Decades later, her photographs are celebrated as some of the most authentic images of a city ever captured on film, and she is remembered not only as a master American photographer but also as a teacher, writer, inventor, and photographic archivist. Veteran nonfiction writer George Sullivan draws on his vast knowledge of the photographic world to chronicle Berenice Abbott's life and career, and to present a fascinating social portrait of the artistic community of New York in the early half of the 20th century. Interviews with her contemporaries and high-quality reproductions of some of her most famous photographs provide an illuminating image of this determined, spirited woman who changed the face of American photography. It was taken on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba, at a memorial service for victims of the La Coubre explosion and by the end of the 1960s turned the charismatic and controversial leader into a cultural icon. Korda has said that at the moment he shot the picture, he was drawn to Guevara's facial expression, which showed "absolute implacability" as well as anger and pain. Years later, Korda would say that the photo showed Che's firm and stoic character. Guevara was 31 at the time the photo was taken. Emphasizing the image's ubiquitous nature and wide appeal, the Maryland Institute College of Art called the picture a symbol of the 20th century and the world's most famous photo. Versions of it have been painted, printed, digitized, embroidered, tattooed, silk-screened, sculpted or

Extend your photo art and science to new scopes by bridging your camera to your computer.Ansel Adams once said, You don't take a photograph. You make it. There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs. Using a computer with software, such as Adobe Photoshop, helps you create a versatile lab that many great 20th-century photographers could only dream about. It helps turn the art of the photograph into photographic art, an extension of your creativity. As photographer, Bernice Abbott, once said, Does not the very word 'creative' mean to build, to initiate, to give out, to act - rather than to be acted upon, to be subjective? Living photography is positive in its approach, it sings a song of life - not death. Your Canon EOS DSLR and your computer can breathe new dimensions of life to your photographs. Let this fine Canon cable bring your camera and computer together.

 Contemporary Lithuanian Photography

Contemporary Lithuanian Photography

$84

At the end of the 20th century, Lithuanian photographers abandoned expressive visual form and humanist content and came up with featureless photography suggesting a reflective approach towards a person. The works of Lithuanian photographers and artists encouraged critical look at the stereotypes of personal identity as well as the role of photography itself in the shaping of such stereotypes. The book defines different creative tactics used by Lithuanian authors and reveals different versions of the relationship between the image and the identity of a person in photography. This is accomplished by applying a new theoretical approach, based on the synthesis of the contemporary photography concept and performativity theory. The work also outlines the place of contemporary Lithuanian photography in international context. The book should be useful for photography theorists, critics, curators and students who wish to get acquainted with contemporary Lithuanian photography as well as for those who seek a deeper insight into it. The book will also give a wider audience a chance to take a look at the culture and life of one of the Eastern European countries through the works of artists.

 Dada: The Revolt of Art

Dada: The Revolt of Art

$12.95

Well-written, loaded with information, and with a rich assortment of illustrations, each Discoveries (r) volume is a look at one facet of art, archaeology, music, history, philosophy, popular culture, science, or nature. These innovatively designed, affordably priced, compact paperbacks bring ideas to life and amplify our understanding of civilization in a new way. Dada was one of the most important and influential movements in 20th-century art. Beginning in the anti-establishment climate around World War I, it encompassed painting, sculpture, photography, poetry and language, graphic design, film, performing arts, and criticism in Europe and America. Dada had an immense effect on art throughout the 20th century. Its emphasis on machines reflected similar mechanistic currents in art through the war years; its appropriation of advertising imagery was revived in Pop Art in later decades; and its anti-aesthetic, anti-object, and anti-art principles persisted in important spurs of artistic theory and practice through the end of the century. The movement's history is outlined in this concise, readable text-the only short introduction devoted exclusively to Dada, supplemented with essential documents and a useful bibliography.

One of the most widely recognized and controversial artists of the 20th century, Salvador Dali was also an avant-garde filmmaker, collaborating with such giants as Luis Bunuel, Walt Disney, and Alfred Hitchcock. From a moviegoing experience that would incorporate all five senses to the tale of a woman''s hapless love affair with a wheelbarrow, Dali''s hallucinatory vision never fails to leave its indelible mark, while his writings continue to be relevant to discourses surrounding film and surrealism.

 Die Kunst Der Abstrakten Fotografie

Die Kunst Der Abstrakten Fotografie

$50.08

Abstract Photography - a genre developed in the early 20th century by international avantgarde artists like Man Ray, Laszlo and Paul Strand - has been little acknowledged as a type of imagery and art in its own right so far. It is the opposite of realistic photography and does not focus on a tangible object. As a distinctive part of the fine arts it has its own specific subjects, forms and functions. This book is the first full-length account of the historic and contemporary trends and theories of abstract photography.

Cadavers, camera, action! ( The New York Times Book Review ). From the advent of photography in the 19th and into the 20th century, medical students, often in secrecy, took photographs of themselves with the cadavers that they dissected: their first patients. Featuring 138 of these historic photographs and illuminating essays by two experts on the subject, Dissection reveals a startling piece of American history. Sherwin Nuland, MD, said this is a truly unique and important book [that] documents a period in medical education in a way that is matched by no other existing contribution. And Mary Roach said Dissection is the most extraordinary book I have ever seen--the perfect coffee table book for all the households where I''d most like to be invited for coffee.

Emanuel Goldberg And His Knowledge Machine

Emanuel Goldberg And His Knowledge Machine

$29.04

This book tells the story of Emanuel Goldberg, a chemist, inventor, and industrialist who contributed to almost every aspect of imaging technology in the first half of the 20th century. Photographic sensitometry, reprographics, standardized film speeds, color printing (moire effect), aerial photography, extreme microphotography (microdots), optics, camera design (the Contax), the first hand-held movie camera, and early television technology--Golberg was involved with them all. Yet history has not been kind to him, and his name has been all but erased from the annals of information science. An incredible story emerges as Buckland unearths forgotten documents and rogue citations to make the case that it was Goldberg, not Vannevar Bush, who created the first desktop search engine. Goldberg, not Professor Zapp (a figment of J. Edgar Hoover's imagination), who developed microdot technology. Goldberg, not Heinz Kueppenbender, who designed the famous Contax 35 mm camera. Buckland firmly yet engagingly gives credit where credit is due, in the process shedding light on the circumstances that led to Goldberg's obscurity. The result is an illuminating tribute to a great mind, and a fascinating investigation of a crucial period in the history of information science and technology.

Just a few months ago I celebrated my 75th birthday with a family reunion on the shores of Lake Chapala, Mexico''s largest lake and the site of our winter home. We ranged in age from 13 months to 75 years. Somewhere along the way I had become the senior member of the family - the previous generation had become little more than memories, lost but for a few faded photographs. I wished I knew more about my parents, my grandparents or perhaps my great-grandparents who lived in a pre-industrial world before the advent of cars and airplanes, before telephones and electricity, even before photography had been perfected. I wished my morfar''s morfar, Olaf Borgquist, had written about his life as a blacksmith in the early 19th century. I decided then and there to record the story of my life; to pass on to my grandchildren and great grandchildren what life was like for an average citizen of the USA during the 20th Century.

 Filming: A Love Story

Filming: A Love Story

$1.99

A series of stories set primarily in India and spanning the 20th century, this collection includes the tale of one-time prostitute, Durga, who is persuaded to give away her young son, Ashok, and that of Saleem, the son of a prostitute and star of the silver screen. As these stories—narrated by a writer who relates the details of other people's lives but is evasive about his own—combine, they create a novel that is simultaneously about the small, minute details of life and the larger, arcing themes of humanity. Weaving together major historical events—including the Partition of India, the assassination of Gandhi, the rise of photography and the Bombay film industry, and the development of barbed wire—with the everyday moments that make up the main fabric of our lives, Filming is both ambitious in its scope and impressive in its execution.

In 1917, two young British cousins, Frances and Elsie, told their parents that they had encountered fairies at Cottingly, a nearby stream. With their father's camera they took highly authentic-looking photographs of themselves and the fairies. For more than 50 years, spiritualists, scientists, and photography experts debated the authenticity of the photos until researchers at the University of Leeds, UK, put the matter to rest by proving that the images were, in fact, skilfully executed photomontages. This new book by internationally acclaimed photographer Annelies Strba examines the Cottingly fairies phenomenon -- and also presents some new mysterious images. Her work takes a straightforward approach to one of the 20th century's most enchanting mysteries.

 Greetings from Indiana

Greetings from Indiana

$24.95

During the first half of the 20th century, nearly every store had a rack of postcards for sale. At a cost of one cent for the card itself, plus another cent for postage, the postcard was an efficient way to send a message. Household telephones were scarce, television wasn't invented yet, and photography was prohibitively time-consuming and expensive for the average person. The postcard served as a means of communication that was quick, with the added bonus of an interesting picture that could be displayed or put into an album. Depicting street scenes, landmarks, fine homes, and roadways, Greetings from Indiana charmingly captures the state's rural and urban past. The points of origin range from Alexandria to Zionsville, representing 70 different Indiana communities. Handwritten messages by laborers, sales clerks, teachers, traveling salesmen, students, relatives, and others, as well as tourist promotions of the time, add further charm to this remarkable assembly of more than 250 vintage Hoosier postcards.

 Guerrillero Heroico

Guerrillero Heroico

$47

Guerrillero Heroico is the name of Alberto Korda's celebrated photo of the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. It was taken on March 5, 1960, in Havana, Cuba, at a memorial service for victims of the La Coubre explosion and by the end of the 1960's turned the charismatic and controversial leader into a cultural icon. Versions of it have been painted, printed, digitized, embroidered, tattooed, silk-screened, sculpted or sketched on nearly every surface imaginable, leading the Victoria and Albert Museum to say that the photo has been reproduced more than any other image in photography.

 Guy Bourdin

Guy Bourdin

$150

Guy Bourdin (1928-1991) created the most challenging fashion photography of the late 20th century. Over a 35-year career, including more than three decades creating confrontational images for French Vogue and groundbreaking campaigns for Charles Jourdan footwear, he staged complex dramas, with every gesture and prop carrying a potent psychological charge. He showed us that in the context of fashion it is rarely the product that compels us; it is the image--the seductive narratives of the commercial world, and the quest for the unattainable--that stirs our desires. Today, Bourdin stands as one of the most influential image-makers of all time. Bourdin cultivated his anonymity, refusing all proposals for books and exhibitions during his lifetime. This volume, published to coincide with the first major exhibition of his photographs, showcases not only his fashion images but also his brooding landscapes and magical cityscapes. The photographs are accompanied by five specially commissioned essays, which together offer the first thorough analysis of Bourdin's unique creativity.

Identities

The study of identity crosses all disciplinary borders to address such issues as the multiple interactions of race, class, and gender in feminist, lesbian, and gay studies, postcolonialism and globalization, and the interrelation of nationalism and ethnicity in ethnic and area studies. Identities will help disrupt the cliché-ridden discourse of identity by exploring the formation of identities and problem of subjectivity.Leading scholars in literary criticism, anthropology, sociology, and philosophy explore such topics as "Gypsies" in the Western imagination, the mobilization of the West in Chinese television, the lesbian identity and the woman's gaze in fashion photography, and the regulation of black women's bodies in early 20th-century urban areas. This collection of twenty articles brings together the special issue of Critical Inquiry entitled "Identities" (Summer 1992), two other previously published essays, and five previously published critical responses and rejoinders, all of which is interrogated in two new essays by Michael Gorra and Judith Butler.Contributors include Elizabeth Abel, Kwame Anthony Appiah, Akeel Bilgrami, Daniel Boyarin, Jonathan Boyarin, Judith Butler, Hazel V. Carby, Xiaomei Chen, Diana Fuss, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Avery Gordon, Michael Gorra, Cheryl Herr, Saree S. Ilse Bing: Photography Through the Looking Glass

Ilse Bing: Photography Through the Looking Glass

$51

While Frankfurt-born Ilse Bing's 1931 Self-Portrait with Leica is an icon of modern photography, her exquisite black-and-white compositions, created mostly during her years in exile in Paris and New York, have not received nearly the attention they deserve. This first-ever monograph of the photographer (1899-1998) dubbed the Queen of the Leica is cause for celebration on two counts: Those with an interest in Bing's work now have an authoritative source to consult; and students of the form now have proof that Bing ranks alongside Brassao, Man Ray, and Henri Cartier-Bresson in the pantheon of 20th-century avant-garde photography. This book, based largely on unpublished material from Bing's personal archive, combines biography with an in-depth study of her work in its historical context, creating a portrait of the artist as revealing as it is overdue.
